Disgraceful: Images of MLK Jr. Being Used to Promote Clubs, Thug Culture

By Lee Williams, Communication Activist

I can’t wait to see Dr. King this holiday weekend. Apparently, he’ll be showing up to many parties around the country. Are you aware of that?

First posted by BlackAmericaWeb by the always controversial Don Lemon (read more about my coverage of Don Lemon here), several images circulated on the web of Martin Luther King Jr. photoshopped into flyers of club promotions. In many of them, King is seen with sagging pants, gold chains, bottles and headphones, as though he’s about to get “turnt up” in the latest Lil Jon or Two Chainz video. The images appear during the week of the late Dr. King’s birthday and a few days before his national holiday on January 20th.

Not only are the images disgraceful and disrespectful, but they play part in the current mentality that embraces thug culture and rachetness (read my post on America’s Fascination with Ratchet Culture).

What do you think about the images of MLK Jr.?

I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own weblog and was curious what all is required to
get set up? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny?
I’m not very web savvy so I’m not 100% sure. Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers
